Greener commuting lifecycle

For those of you that aren’t aware of the greener commuting lifecycle, I’ve put together this small article to get you up to speed. There are eight stages to this cycle and the first one starts a little after you begin to walk. In your formative years you commute locally to the end of the block, to the park and the school playground usually using a tricycle.

This mode of commuting is very green but can get a little messy if you don’t properly schedule your washroom breaks.

As you get older most people have a need to travel back and forth to school. Many students choose to make this daily trip via school bus.

Although this mode of transportation isn’t as good for the environment as a tricycle it’s faster and when you break it down per passenger it’s a fairly green choice.

During your later teen years you start wanting a bit of independence and the school bus doesn’t do it for you any longer. You start saving as much money as you can from your burger-flipping job and you end up buying a beater.

This is probably the worst phase of the greener commuting lifecycle since the car you buy is very old and was built before they had emissions standards. If you’re lucky enough, you don’t even have to wear a safety belt because the car didn’t come with any.

Later on in life you start smartening up and you become wiser. You get married, have some kids and choose a minivan for your commuting needs. This is a fairly clean choice but a bit boring.

After a few years at about mid-life and in addition to your minivan you purchase a shiny new sports car. You fight the trend and instead of buying a red Corvette you get a silver one and justify it by saying silver can hide the dirt better so I won’t have to wash the car every week.

Two vehicles for the family isn’t such a green choice but it’s made out of necessity.

Much later in life your driver’s license gets taken away because you’ve gone through a little too many stop signs or because the doctor tells the authorities that you’re no longer capable of driving safely. An electric scooter meets your commuting needs and is very good for the environment.

Some people near the end of their life end up choosing an ambulance for their transportation needs but some just skip this phase and choose a hearse.

That folks, is the greener commuting lifecycle.
